Facebook Quiet Mode

Facebook ‘Quiet Mode’ has recently rolled out giving users the opportunity to schedule a social media break.

It is noticeable that people are spending more time on social platforms amid the COVID-19 lockdowns. But it is also important to take a break from it. According to studies, spending too much time om social media platforms can fuel mental health problems. Facebook acknowledges this and it’s safe to say that this new feature will be a big help.

Facebook ‘Quiet Mode’ helps you manage and control your Facebook usage. You will now be able to schedule your usage on Facebook, giving you the opportunity to spend time on something other than social media.

Facebook has also revamped its ‘Your Time on Facebook’. This displays data such as how many times you opened the app within the last week, how your usage compares to the same time last week and daytime versus nighttime usage.

Facebook explains the following:

“As we all adjust to new routines and staying home, setting boundaries for how you spend your time online can be helpful. We’ve added Quiet Mode, which mutes most push notifications, and if you try to open Facebook while in Quiet Mode, you’ll be reminded that you set this time aside to limit your time in the app. We’ve also added shortcuts to Notification Settings and News Feed Preferences, so you can make the most of your time on Facebook by controlling the type of posts you see in your News Feed as well as the updates you receive.”

How to activate Quiet Mode:

  • Go to your settings menu on Facebook
  • Click on ‘Your Time on Facebook’
  • Then go to Manage your time
  • Schedule your time or use it immediately

If you access the app while Quiet Mode is activated, it’ll display how much time you have eft before your break ends. It does however give you the option to use Facebook for 15 minutes.

Unfortunately for Android users, this feature is only scheduled to be released in May. It is currently available for iPhone users.

What does this mean for marketers?

With Facebook introducing this new feature, getting your ad in front of the right audience at the right time has just become more challenging.

As a business or marketer you need to make sure the content you put out there is valuable enough. Valuable content will prevent people from taking long social media breaks. Or, if they do, make sure you are invested in multiple social channels. Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, the list goes on.
